Project Background

One of our customers was operating an RO pretreatment system for industrial process water. The system required continuous filtration before the RO membrane to remove suspended particles and reduce the risk of membrane fouling.

Before contacting Pullner, the customer was using standard filter cartridges in the pretreatment stage. However, due to the high flow rate and unstable feed water quality, the cartridges needed to be replaced frequently. This caused higher maintenance cost, more labor work, and unstable pressure drop during operation.

As the customer mentioned during our discussion:

“The filter cartridges are changed too often. We want to reduce replacement frequency, but the flow rate cannot be affected.”

This was the main requirement of the project. The customer was not only looking for a lower price cartridge. They needed a more suitable filtration solution for a high-flow RO pretreatment system.

Customer Challenge

After reviewing the working conditions, we found that the main problem was not only the micron rating, but also the cartridge structure and filtration area.

The original filter cartridges had limited dirt holding capacity. When the feed water contained more suspended solids, the pressure drop increased quickly, and the service life became shorter.

The customer also needed to protect the downstream RO membrane. If particles were not removed effectively in the pretreatment stage, the RO membrane would face higher fouling risk and more frequent cleaning.

Another concern was installation. The customer preferred a solution that could fit the existing filtration system as much as possible, instead of changing the whole system design.

Pullner Technical Analysis

Based on the customer’s requirements, Pullner recommended a high flow pleated filter cartridge for the RO pretreatment stage.

Compared with conventional filter cartridges, the high flow cartridge has a larger diameter and a larger pleated filtration area. This structure allows higher flow capacity per cartridge and helps reduce the number of cartridges required in the system.

The pleated design also provides lower initial pressure drop and better dirt holding capacity, which is important for continuous industrial water filtration. For RO pretreatment, this can help improve system stability and reduce unexpected cartridge replacement.

The inside-to-outside flow direction allows particles to be intercepted effectively inside the cartridge. At the same time, the thermally welded structure avoids adhesives and improves the cleanliness and reliability of the cartridge.

Customer Feedback

After reviewing the proposed solution, the customer confirmed that the large filtration area and high flow design matched their main concern.

The customer replied:

“This design is better for us. If it can reduce the change-out frequency, it will help our operation a lot.”

This feedback showed that the customer’s focus was not only the cartridge unit price. In industrial filtration, service life, pressure drop, replacement frequency, and system stability are often more important than the purchase price of a single filter cartridge.

Solution Value

The high flow filter cartridge helped the customer improve the RO pretreatment stage in several ways.

  • First, the larger filtration area increased dirt holding capacity and supported longer operating time.
  • Second, the high flow design reduced the number of cartridges required for the same flow rate, making installation and maintenance easier.

Conclusion

This project shows that RO pretreatment filtration should not be selected only by micron rating. Flow rate, pressure drop, dirt holding capacity, cartridge structure, feed water quality, and housing compatibility all need to be considered.
